Chapel Daily Lectionary - Adapted From Evangelisches Tagzeitenbuch
Second Last Week in Pentecost (Trinity)
Romans
2:1-11
Therefore you are inexcusable, O man,
whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn
yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the
judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and
doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the
riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the
goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness
and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of
wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who "will render to
each one according to his deeds": eternal life to those who by patient
continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those
who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey
unrighteousness--indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul
of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor,
and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the
Greek. For there is no partiality with God.
Luke 13:1-9
There were present at that season some who told Him
about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And
Jesus answered and said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were
worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I
tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those
eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that
they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you,
no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."
He also spoke this parable: "A certain man had a fig
tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, "Look, for three years I have
come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use
up the ground?' But he answered and said to him, "Sir, let it alone this
year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well.
But if not, after that you can cut it down."'
Isaiah
1:10-17
Hear the word of the LORD,
You rulers of Sodom;
Give ear to the law of our God,
You people of Gomorrah:
"To what purpose is the
multitude of your sacrifices to Me?"
Says the LORD.
"I have had enough of burnt
offerings of rams
And the fat of fed cattle.
I do not delight in the blood of
bulls,
Or of lambs or goats.
"When you come to appear before
Me,
Who has required this from your hand,
To trample My courts?
Bring no more futile sacrifices;
Incense is an abomination to Me.
The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the
calling of assemblies--
I cannot endure iniquity and the
sacred meeting.
Your New Moons and your appointed
feasts
My soul hates;
They are a trouble to Me,
I am weary of bearing them.
When you spread out your hands,
I will hide My eyes from you;
Even though you make many prayers,
I will not hear.
Your hands are full of blood.
"Wash yourselves, make
yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from
before My eyes.
Cease to do evil,
Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor;
Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the widow.
